! E94.0318.16.01 SKU 11(3):42 Skinner, Vicki: From data in the Seattle Genealogy Library: John J. Skinner must have been born before about 1780, judging from his marriage date, Feb. 25, 1797. Place of birth was probably Georgia, as his father was there by 1779. He was married in Columbia Co., Ga. to Susannah Coaker, who must also have been born before about 1780. In 1803, a John Skinner, probably this same man, participated in the Columbia Co., Ga. Land Lottery. Between 1803 and 1817, he and his wife moved to Jackson Co., Ga., for on 8 February 1817, they signed an indenture in that County, to Richard Skinner, his brother, of Columbia Co., selling certain lands inherited from his late father, Isaac Skinner. There is a good possibility that they were in Kentucky during a part of the intervening period, because there is a John Skinner listed in the Pontotoc Co., Miss. Census of 1850, who appears to be his son, and who was listed as having been born in Kentucky in about 1815. The following Power of Attorney of John Skinner to Augustus C. Skinner was recorded 19th January 1818: ³Georgia, Jackson Co. Know all men by these present that I have made, ordained, constituted, and appointed my trusty son Augustus C. Skinner my true and lawful attorney to act in my name and on my behalf, to trade away or sell my part of my motherıs estate in Columbia county and make titles in my name and to do any, all and singular the transacting which I could do myself were I present and I do hereby ratify and confirm all acts and deed which my son, my said attorney, shall do in all purposes as much so as if I were present and had done them myself. I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 9th day of January 1818. John Skinner. Witnesses: David Rogets, S. Bryant, F. P. Deed Book R, p. 244.² The Jackson Co., Ga., Census of 1820 shows the following: John Skinner, 3 males under 10 3 males over 45 1 male 10-16 1 female under 10 1 male 26-45 1 female 16-26 In a power of Attorney dated 26 April, Jacob Skinner, his brother, described him as being ³of the Parish of Carroll and State of Louisiana.² However, he may have meant Carroll Co., Miss, where he was on 8 Sept. 1842 and later, as mentioned in several other powers of Attorney. He was not in the Carroll co. Miss. Census of 1850, however, and may have died by this time. No later mention of him has been found. In Oktibbeha Co., Miss., a John J. Skinner, undoubtedly the same man, was Probate Judge in 1835, and State Representative in 1838-40. The one known son of John J. Skinner was Augustus C. Skinner, as mentioned in the above Power of Attorney.
