!E94.0318.16.01 SKU 11(3):42 Skinner, VJ. From data in the Seattle
Genealogy Library:
On Aug. 25, 1834, Augustus C. Skinner, who gave his address as
Tuscaloosa, took out some land at the General Land Office in Tuscaloosa,
and paid cash for it at the rate of $1.25 and acre. this land was in
Township 24 North, Range 4 East, St. Stephenıs Meridian, Tuscaloosa Co.,
NE 1/4 of the NE 1/4 of Section 3, 39. 69 1/2 acres, and was patented
Oct. 1, 1835 under cash entry 11053. I have a photostatic copy of this
land transaction. His signature appears on the application papers.
The Augustin C. Skinner of the Fayette Co. 1830 Census no longer
was there when the 1840 Census was taken, but Augustus C. Skinner was
in Tuscaloosa Co. in the 1840 Census:
1 male 10-15 2 females 5-10
2 males 15-20 1 female 10-15
1 male 40-50 1 female 40-50
The age groupings of the two censuses agree, and spellings in
censuses of the period often varied. There is no doubt that these two
reports show the same family. The fact that there is one male less in the
lowest age group in the latter census is easily accounted for by the very
high infant mortality rate of this period.
It has not been possible to locate A.C. Skinner in and 1850 census.
It is probable that he died before this time, or moved again into an area
which I have not checked. He does not appear in th area around Okolona,
Miss., to which A.W.C. moved before this time. He probably died at
Tuscaloosa between 1840 and 25 Mar. 1844, when a ³Trustee for Polly
(Mary) Skinner² deeded lands, according to Deed Book U. p. 328.
Tuscaloosa Co., Deed Book P, p. 155, bears an entry of transfer of land by
Augustus C. Skinner, and wife Mary (X, her mark) to James Foster dated
26 Feb. 1839. Mrs. L.G. Simmons, of Pontotoc, Miss. a descendant of
Thomas H. A. Skinner, furnished a comment that a sister of Amaza
(Jones) Hornbarger was Polly (Jones) Johnson. It seems that this could be
Augustus C. Skinnerıs widow, remarried.
According to the Census records, Augustus C. Skinner was born
between 1790 and 1800, as was his wife, Polly or Mary Jones. Aunt
Minnie Williams stated that she thought that he was born in Ga., as was
proven by the 1880 Census mentioned earlier. She also mentioned that
her father used to talk about his old grandmother Skinner and
Grandmother Golden, and that one was 110 and the other 111 years old
when they died. the latter name was actually Golding, and the
relationship was one generation further back. It is quite likely that
Augustus C. Skinner and Mary Jones were married in Tuscaloosa, Ala.,
since here is no known connection between them in Ga., from whence
they both came. Since her sister, Mazey, or Amaza, married Thomas H.A.
Skinner in Tuscaloosa in 1819, it would appear that the Skinners and the
Joneses had all moved there and met, followed by these two marriages.
The Census records would indicate that A.C. Skinner was married before
1825, and the birthdate of A.W.C. Skinner would indicate that it was
before 1822. Mary Jones was the daughter of Reuben & Rebecca Jones,
who moved from Georgia, where, for at least a time, they were in Wilkes
Co.
Another son of Augustus C. & Mary Skinner was Jim, who was a
Confederate soldier. Nothing more is know about him. It also appears that
there was another son, Joe, about whom nothing is known.
Augustus C. Skinner took out land in Tuscaloosa Co. Ala very near
that taken out about the same time by his uncle, Thomas H.A. Skinner.
