Autobiography answering the questions my great niece (Coreene JONES)
asked about things I remember of my life. It's rather a big order.
Everett, WA, 1936:
1st. I was born in Cora, Ohio, Sept 7th, 1873, Gallia Co., Perry
Township near Raccoon Creek, about twelve miles from the county seat
"Gallipolis". My great great grandfather was the first white child born in
this city. His name was Vonschriltz.. He was of French descent. My
great great grandmother was Scotch and French descent.
2nd. My oldest brother Charles Junius, born in June 1866; Aaron Wilbur,
born in June 1869; Minta Armanda, born in March 1871; Lille Coreene, Oct
the 20th, 1876. Charlie married Carrie PROSE, now living in
Bloomington, IL. Aaron married Amelia JONES. She died in 1936. He is
in Columbus, OH. Minta married Charles WIGNER, now in Gallipolis, OH.
Lille married John Ellis JONES. She died in 1909. Don't know where he
is.
3rd. My father, Henry Clay SKINNER. Son of Daniel and Hannah (TYLER)
SKINNER, was born in Meigs Co, OH, August 23rd 1841. He died in Oak
Hill, OH (of hardening of the arteries) Apr 21st 1921.
My mother, Emily Giles DAVIS, daughter of Aaron and Ruth
(VONSHRILTZ) DAVIS was born at Cora, OH, January 8th 1845. She died
on Sept 2nd 1883 of Appendicitis. They were married on Dec 25th 1865.
I spent the first ten years of my life with my parents near Cora, OH, on a
farm. My father taught school most of that time. Then moved to West
Virginia, on a farm for a short time. Then went to Gallipolis, where my
father clerked in a hardware store. We lived just inside the city limits,
went to city school, there was where I learned my multiplication tables.
My mother died in this home. Father stayed on in town.
The brothers were sent to Rio Grande College to finish the rest of the
term of school, then went to our grandparents, Aaron and Ruth DAVIS,
who owned a large farm, a grist mill, saw mill, general store, and the
Post Office. So you see they had plenty of work for my brothers. My
oldest and youngest sisters also lived with also lived with our
grandparents. All lived there until married. I lived with my aunt and
uncle, Vincent and Henrietta WOOD. "Also one daughter Adda Anna, now
Mrs. Harry BEARDSLEY of Salem, OR, at this writing." We lived on a farm
about three miles from my brothers and sisters. My aunt is living with
her daughter in Salem. She is eighty-three years old, "Failing this
winter." I was ten years old the day I went there to live, and stayed
there until I was twenty three. Then married.
