John Trout moved to Van Buren in summer of 1828 (History of Van Buren). John bought house lot #4 in Somerset of father and mother for $20.00, deed dated 8 Sep 1814 just prior to marriage. The Skinner house was just on the northern edge of Somerset according to James H. Smith of Somerset. Hronek, RE. 1983. Sesquicentennial Celebration Van Buren, OH 1883 1983. John Trout came to Hancock county in the summer of 1828, selected land and erected a double log cabin on the site of Van Buren. He returned to Perry county for his family, arriving here in December 1828. The trip was long and arduous - fording rivers, swamps and streams, and cutting their way through forests and thicket, the sturdy parents with their five children trudged many a weary mile, and on December 15, 1828 they took possession of their cabin. A daughter, Eliza, afterward married Elisha Beeson which was the first marriage in the settlement.
