Notes

!.....(03/21/2007) I've been researching my great great grandfather Eli SKINNER and one thing I've discovered so far is that nobody I've contacted has any proof that his parents were John S. & Catherine (STRAIT) SKINNER. While John S. & Catherine SKINNER had a son named Henry who was the right age to have been Eli SKINNER, there are also other possibilities for Eli SKINNER's parents, including lots of circumstantial evidence pointing towards Zebal SKINNER b. 1815, son of Richard SKINNER b. 1775 having been Eli SKINNER. I'm seeking proof as to what happened to Eli SKINNER and proof as to who his parents really were.

On the John S. & Catherine (STRAIT) SKINNER line there is also no proof that I've seen that her maiden name was STRAIT.

Concerning Eli SKINNER's illiterate widow who you have listed as Emeline Emma ALLEN, I do have proof from the termination by a daughter of the Civil War pension from her marriage to second husband Reuben SPURGEON that she died 13 November 1898. I don't know where she died yet, but it was likely Hocking, Perry, or Athens Co., OH.

About my great great grandmother's name, on the Hocking Co. land that she owned with Eli SKINNER, her name was listed as Amelia SKINNER when that land was sold, as it was on the 1849 Hocking Co., OH marriage record of her marriage to her second husband Reuben SPURGEON. She was referred to as "Millie" on the death certificate of her dau. Margaret (SKINNER) LANNING. "Millie" is a variation of the name "Amelia." Her Perry Co., OH marriage record of her marriage to Eli SKINNER lists her given name twice as "Meleca." Since "Mela" is a variation of the name "Amelia," I suspect that "Meleca," was too. My great grandfather Richard SKINNER gave her given name as "Emma" on his Civil War pension application, so that seems to be a name she liked to be called. She was "Emily" in Reuben SPURGEON's Civil War pension file. I suspect that her name may have been Amelia Emeline ALLEN. I also suspect that her parents were Richard & Lucinda (CORDER) ALLEN, who lived in the same vicinity. I suspect that Eli & Amelia SKINNER's Hocking Co. land was obtained from them, but don't have proof yet.

A sister of Amelia (ALLEN) SKINNER SPURGEON was the Nancy (ALLEN) RUSH in your index. There were more children and is more data available than you have listed.
